Why use Video Creation Tools in YouTube?


Students with smartphones can easily shoot, edit and access free resources to create their videos.

The Case for using YouTube Video Creation Tools:


If YouTube is the destination for the video anyway, then why not edit it there too? The case is less compelling for students (and teachers) using iPads, but if on the MacBook, then it's well worth considering.

The Project in this Professional Development:


1. You will write a short script that:
a) introduces yourself
b) states what you teach and grades taught
c) how you use YouTube in the classroom

2. You will pair up and record your script using 'YouTube Capture' (iOS)

3. Edit your video using 'Video Creation' tools in YouTube on your Mac, including:
a) transitions
b) (additional) audio
c) titles

1. Script your Video (OPTIONAL for inclusion later of CAPTIONS)


Your script can be uploaded later (see Project Extension) for optional 'Captions' in your video. To use your script though, it must be saved in Plain Text format, which of course you can do in Pages.
  • Open 'Pages' ad type your short script.
  • File > Save > <myscript>.txt i.e.

You might use a few takes (to make it interesting), or just grab 1 take. But either way, you're ready to start editing your finished video.

3. Edit using YouTube 'Video Creation' tools

What editing tools are offered in the YouTube Video Creation Tools?


YouTube Creation Tools includes a large library of additional media available in YouTube that is not available in iMovie, including:
  • Videos (courtesy of Creative Commons)
  • Music Library (select instruct, genre etc....but also DURATION!)
  • Titles
  • Transitions

Editing with Video Creation Tools


Introducing the Video Editor! With the Video Editor, you can:
  • Combine multiple videos and images you've uploaded to create a new video
  • Trim your clips to custom lengths
  • Add music to your video from a library of approved tracks
  • Customise clips with special tools and effects

Using these tools, you can put together clips to create new videos and publish them to YouTube with one click.
Here's how to access the Video Editor:
  1. Sign in to your YouTube account
  2. Click the Upload button at the top of the page
  3. Click Edit on the right of the upload page, under "Video Editor"

All of your uploads are added automatically to the Video Editor and can be used as a clip. Up to 50 clips and 500 images can be added to a project to create a new video.

Here's how to add a video clip or image.
  1. Find the clip or image you want to add in the upper left of the Editor. Click the camera icon to browse images
  2. Move your mouse over the clip/image you want to add, then click the + button
  3. Or, drag the clip/image to the bottom of the timeline at the bottom of the editor, where it says Drag videos here to begin editing when you start a new project

There are a variety of other methods too for uploading from your iOS devices (as well as Mac). Click here for some of those, or navigate in the left side panel of this website to 'YouTube: Upload' to see this page.

Once your clip is in the timeline, you can customise its length.
  • Trim: Cut the length of your clip by moving your cursor over the edges of your video in the timeline. Drag the handles toward the centre of the video to shorten.
  • Lengthen: Drag the handles outward from the centre of the video to lengthen. Lengthening past the original length of the video will result in the video repeating.
  • Cut/Snip: Clips can be cut into portions. Move your mouse over the video and click the scissors icon to bring up the snip marker. Move this to where you want to snip the clip, then click on the scissors button to snip the clip.

Media to add to your Project


Focus: Media you can add to your Project
You can add more of course to your Project than just your own video clips, or those sourced from Creative Commons. You can also add (refer to above key):
  1. Photos
  2. Audio
  3. Transitions
  4. Titles

Once you've got some clips assembling in your Timeline, you can perform the following tweaks and enhancements:
  • Rotate: Rotates your video 90 degrees
  • Effects: Apply Video Enhancements to your video to colour correct, stabilise, and add filters
  • Text: Apply a text overlay on the clip
  • Slow Motion: Modify the speed at which the clip plays

Annotations


Video Annotations are a new way for you to add interactive commentary to your videos! Use it to:
  • Add background information about the video
  • Create stories with multiple possibilities (viewers click to choose the next scene)
  • Link to related YouTube videos, channels or search results from within a video
  • All of the above!
You control what the annotations say, where they appear on the video and when they appear and disappear.

Project Extension: Adding Captions (subtitles)


It can be a huge advantage to have captions included in your video. Having written a script, this additional option is a step away.

Move your mouse over a clip to bring up any of these options.

Add Captions:
  1. Visit your Video Manager and click the drop-down menu next to the “Edit” button for the video you’d like to add captions to.
  2. Select Captions.
  3. If you haven’t added captions before, click the Add captions button. Or, if you’ve already added a caption, click the 'Add a new track' button.
  4. After following the steps above, select Upload a file.
  5. Set your track language. If you'd like you can also add a track name.
  6. Click Upload.
  7. Select your caption or transcript file and click open.
  8. After following the steps above, select Transcribe and sync.
  9. Set your track language. If you'd like you can also add a track name.
  10. Type or copy and paste your transcript into the text box.
  11. Once you're finished, click Sync.
